Fake Airdrop Checklist

Fake airdrops use free-token promises to push users into clicking risky links, connecting wallets, signing messages, or approving malicious permissions.

Use this checklist before claiming an airdrop, mint, reward, token migration, or surprise allocation.

Stop if the airdrop asks for this

  • Your seed phrase, recovery phrase, private key, or wallet backup.
  • A signature you do not understand.
  • An unlimited token approval for a small reward.
  • A payment to unlock a supposedly free claim.
  • Personal information that seems unrelated to the claim.
  • Urgent action through a direct-message link.

Check the source

Scammers often copy a real project’s branding, social posts, and website design. A familiar logo is not enough.

  • Find the claim link from the project’s official website or verified announcement channels.
  • Check the domain carefully for spelling changes or extra words.
  • Be careful with links from replies, comments, DMs, unknown Telegram groups, and fake Discord announcements.
  • Do not trust screenshots as proof that an airdrop is real.
  • Search for independent warnings before connecting a wallet.

Check the wallet request

An airdrop claim may require a wallet interaction, but the details matter. Pause before approving or signing anything.

  • Does the request match the action you expected?
  • Is the site asking for broad permissions?
  • Is the claim pushing you to act before a timer ends?
  • Are you using a wallet that contains assets you cannot afford to risk?
  • Would you still trust the claim if there were no promise of free tokens?

Common fake airdrop tactics

  • Impersonating a real project or founder.
  • Posting fake “eligibility checker” links.
  • Using fake support accounts to guide users to a claim page.
  • Creating fake urgency with countdown timers.
  • Offering high rewards for very little effort.
  • Using compromised social accounts to make links look trustworthy.

Safer claiming habits

  • Use official sources to find claim pages.
  • Use a separate low-risk wallet for claims when appropriate.
  • Do not claim from links sent by strangers.
  • Reject wallet requests that do not make sense.
  • Do not share recovery phrases under any circumstances.
  • Keep records needed for taxes, accounting, or compliance.
